Evaluation of Integrated Lesson Plans for Substance Abuse Prevention
High School students are exposed to messages about substance use through a variety of means. It is possible that students ‘turn off’ health messaging due to the overabundance of it. Healthy Communities of St. Charles County, Missouri initiated a pilot intervention to reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) by high school students through exposure to ATOD-related information delivered through school lesson plans. The goal of the evaluation was to determine whether the pilot intervention contributed to:
- Increased knowledge of risks/harm associated with ATOD use (protective factor)
- Increased ratings of harm associated with ATOD use (protective factor)
- Decreased ratings of approval for peer use of ATOD (risk factor)
